Policy for reporting child abuse open for comments
UC is proposing to issue a new policy on reporting child abuse, written to comply with existing California law and amendments that took effect Jan. 1.
The Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect describes the legal requirements that the university is obligated to implement and enforce.
Under the law, some UC staff positions such as health care professionals, employees of law enforcement agencies and athletic coaches are mandated reporters. The law requires these individuals to report any observed or suspected child abuse to local child protective services offices or law enforcement agencies and sign a form acknowledging that they understand this obligation.
With this policy, the university has gone beyond the legal requirements to also require internal reports to help assure that any concerns of child abuse or neglect are promptly addressed.
UCOP employees covered by this policy who wish to provide comments on the proposal may submit them to Employee and Labor Relations Manager Michael Lum at Michael.Lum@ucop.edu by Friday, Feb. 15.
