February is College Awareness Month at UCOP

Join Education Partnerships in celebrating College Awareness Month this February.

A department within UCOP’s Academic Affairs Division, Education Partnerships is planning several activities this month to showcase UC’s outreach efforts to make college a reality for every deserving student.

Check out the exhibit in the Franklin lobby spotlighting the work Education Partnerships does to provide college access and preparation for underserved K–12 students and professional development for their teachers. Featured EP programs include Student-Initiated Programs, University–Community Engagement, the Early Academic Outreach Program and P-20 Partnerships.

Education Partnerships will also sponsor these college awareness events:

Brown bag: California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS), Wednesday, Feb. 5, 12 to 1 p.m., Franklin Lobby 1 Conference Room

Do you know a high school student who’s interested in pursuing an education in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics? UC’s COSMOS program is a four-week residential summer learning opportunity offered at the Davis, Irvine, San Diego and Santa Cruz campuses. It’s designed to give students a chance to learn from and collaborate with UC faculty on advanced math and science projects.

Talk and book signing with Patricia McDonough: Tuesday, Feb. 18, 12 to 1 p.m., Franklin Lobby 1 Conference Room

Patricia McDonough will discuss her book, Choosing Colleges: How Social Class and Schools Structure Opportunity (SUNY Press, 1997). McDonough is associate dean for academic affairs and professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Her expertise is in the areas of college access, organizational culture and educational equity. Twenty-five books will be raffled at the event for signing, and light refreshments will be served.

College Awareness Month was instituted in 2001 by an act of the state legislature to heighten awareness about college preparation among school children and their parents.
