Staff Appreciation Week: Be a part of your community, Wednesday, Oct. 1

Staff Appreciation Week isn’t just about being appreciated. It’s also about showing our appreciation.

You are invited to give back to the community of which we are a part by joining a fundraising drive on Community Day, Wednesday, Oct. 1, during Staff Appreciation Week.

The activity supports Covenant House California, which provides support services for at-risk youth living on the streets. Among its many programs in the Bay Area, Covenant House provides housing for homeless youth who have either experienced a crisis or aged out of the foster system. The residence, at Harrison and 2nd streets in downtown Oakland, houses 25 to 30 residents ages 18 to 21.

Community Day is a part of the UC Oakland Partnership, OP’s outreach effort to strengthen ties with the Oakland community by supporting local businesses and civic organizations as well as awarding scholarships to Oakland high school students planning to enroll at a UC campus.

You can participate in the Covenant House drive in two ways:

  • Donate funds in advance of Oct. 1 to help purchase supplies. Give your donation (checks made payable to UC Regents) to Donna Collins, Alina Tejera (Franklin building), Kay Coelho, Tanya Egloff, Emma Sebastian (Kaiser building), Elizabeth Agbayani (Broadway building) or Michael Annas (20th St. building). Your donations will be used to purchase toiletries like shampoo and toothpaste, socks and basic clothing, writing supplies and phone cards.
  • On Oct. 1, come to 5320 Franklin between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to help assemble the supplies and fill backpacks to donate to shelter residents, with the goal of filling 25 to 40 backpacks. Contact Paul Lechner at Paul.Lechner@ucop.edu if you’d like to join the effort.

Oaklandish, the Oakland-based clothing shop at 1444 Broadway, has donated 50 T-shirts, which will be among the items in the finished backpacks. Any overage of supplies will be donated directly to Convenant House.

If you have questions about the drive, please contact Alina Tejera at Alina.Tejera@ucop.edu.

Staff Appreciation Week takes place Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 and also includes these events:

Tuesday, Sept. 30, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Staff Appreciation Lunch on the Franklin fifth floor patio, featuring tacos with all the fixings, desserts and tabling by UCOP’s affinity groups.

Thursday, Oct. 2, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Free admittance to the Oakland Museum all day by showing your UCOP badge.

Friday, Oct. 3, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.:
The popular talent show returns to Kaiser Auditorium, featuring performers from UCOP’s Oakland-based community and the semi-annual Milestone Service Awards as well as a wine and cheese reception.

Look for ongoing updates in Link as we get closer to Staff Appreciation Week!

(Note that the previously announced partnership with Stop Hunger Now for Community Day fell through due to a policy issue.)

If possible, paying through a debit card online, would be a best option for many people like me, as we may not always carry the check books. Just a suggestion!
