Fidelity workshops take the worry out of saving for retirement

Fidelity Retirement Counselor Nancy Pergot provides free workshops for UCOP employees on a variety of financial topics. In addition to general retirement planning classes, this quarter she is debuting a couple of new offerings: a series for women and a debt management, budgeting and planning workshop.

Women & Investing — Get Organized

For many women, planning for retirement brings special challenges. Why? Because women tend to live longer, save less and not to be as engaged as men when it comes to retirement and financial planning. This class is designed to help you build healthy financial habits. You’ll learn how to create a budget and build a debt/savings strategy.

  • Kaiser 705: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 9-10 a.m., and Friday, Dec. 11, 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Getting on the Right Path with Your Workplace Savings

This class is designed to help you make the most of your UC Retirement Savings Program: the 403(b) and 457(b) plans. You will learn the benefits of joining your retirement savings plan, why it’s important to save for retirement and how to get started. After you complete the class, you should be able to determine your workplace savings needs, enroll in the 403(b) and 457(b) plans, and make your initial investment elections.

Fundamentals of Retirement Income Planning

This class will help you understand when you are ready to retire. During the class, you’ll learn key concepts, considerations and resources that can help you plan for your income in retirement. At the end of the class, you’ll be better equipped to determine when you can retire from UC.

Building a Portfolio for Any Weather

This class explains the role of asset allocation and diversification when you are choosing investments for your UC Retirement Savings Program accounts. After this class, you should be able to recognize the characteristics of the three asset classes, identify an appropriate target asset mix based on your situation and understand how and when to adjust your mix.

Accessing your Account Online

This class offers a quick overview of the tools available on the Fidelity NetBenefits® web site to help you manage your UC Retirement Savings Program investments. When the class is complete, you should be able to log in and make account transactions as well as use the available retirement planning tools and resources.

Create a Budget, Ditch Your Debt, and Start Building for the Future

In this class, you will learn about types of debt, good and bad. You’ll get tips for boosting your credit rating and ways to whittle down your debt.

Designing a Financial Roadmap

This class teaches you how to build a financial roadmap that can help you navigate all your savings needs. You’ll learn how to plan for retirement while establishing non-retirement goals and savings options. You’ll also review ways to protect your assets.

Women & Investing — Build and Own Your Plan

This class is designed to help women understand their unique approach to investing and begin building a plan for investing their personal and retirement savings. You’ll learn what a mutual fund is, what type of investor you are, how to build a diversified mix of investments, and how to monitor and evaluate your investments over time.

Your UC Retirement System

This class will introduce you to your UC Retirement System — the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) and the UC Retirement Savings Program (your UC 403(b) and 457(b) plans). After the class, you’ll have a better understanding of how the programs work together to help you build a more secure financial future.

Creating Your Personal Retirement Roadmap

This class will introduce you to the www.ucfocusonyourfuture.com website and the Personalized Retirement Roadmap tool. After the class, you’ll understand how to use the tool to create your personal retirement strategy and a personalized action plan that can help you move your strategy forward.

Women & Investing — Retirement Income Planning On Your Own

Because women generally live longer than men, it’s especially important for women to plan for a lengthy and financially healthy retirement. This class is designed to help you decide when you may be able to retire, estimate how long your money may last and prepare for challenges you may face in retirement.

Preserving Your Savings for Future Generations

This class will help you understand key tools for estate planning. You’ll also learn about strategies for gifting and insurance replacement, see what you need to consider when you’re designating your beneficiaries, and get tools and resources that can help you take the next step.
