Event today: Learn about being a mentor for the East Bay College Fund
Have you ever thought of becoming a mentor to one of Oakland’s youth? Well, now is the time — you are needed!
President Napolitano has designated UCOP as a partner of Oakland Promise, an initiative to triple the number of Oakland youth that graduate from college within the next 10 years. The East Bay College Fund (EBCF), the lead agency in the Oakland Promise, is a community-based non-profit that provides mentorship, college scholarships, college access and persistence services to first-generation college students from Oakland public schools.
Of the 400+ awards that have been given, 90 percent of EBCF scholars are the first in their families to attend college. To date, 80 percent have graduated within six years (that’s four times the national average for low-income students!).
This year, EBCF hopes to match 300 four-year scholarship recipients with dedicated new mentors. You could become one of them.
