UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol T. Christ headlines UCOP’s second Chancellor Chat

On Wednesday, June 5, UCOP welcomed UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol T. Christ for its second UCOP Chancellor Chat — a series of informal monthly conversations between campus chancellors and UCOP staff, sponsored by the UCOP Staff Assembly. Christ spoke to a full room in Oakland’s Franklin building lobby, with about 200 hundred more employees tuning in online.

Financial Analyst Carol Lake opened the event on behalf of the OP Staff Assembly, sharing highlights from Chancellor Christ’s career. Christ spent more than three decades as a professor and administrator at UC Berkeley and is a celebrated scholar of Victorian Literature, about which she has authored two books.

Christ assumed her current role in 2017, when she was appointed as UC Berkeley’s first-ever woman chancellor. Her accomplishments as chancellor include creating a sense of community and openness for students from all backgrounds, celebrating free speech, strengthening the campus’s financial position and addressing a housing shortage. She is a strong advocate of public education, a broad education in the liberal arts and sciences, and of women’s issues and diversity.

In her remarks, Christ shared her experiences at UC Berkeley, from her arrival on campus following the Summer of Love to today’s campus climate. “What I felt from the time that I arrived at Berkeley,” she said, “is that it’s a place where history is happening.”

The Q&A portion of the event covered what Chancellor Christ values most in her staff (design thinking), advancements in wayfinding on campus, the impact of city government on campus housing, diversity initiatives and more.
