On Oct. 17, get disaster-ready: Great ShakeOut and UCOPAlert test

If the recent PG&E power outage and 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Walnut Creek weren’t enough of a reminder, now is the best time to prepare for a natural disaster — earthquake or otherwise.

Participate in the Great ShakeOut

On Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10:17 a.m., get ready to drop, cover and hold on! You may feel a bit silly crouching under your desk, but practice is an important part of building the muscle memory you’ll need to act swiftly during a real disaster.

Sign up for UCOPAlert — and watch for your test

UCOPAlert is OP’s off-hours notification system. If an emergency situation occurs outside normal business that will affect your workplace or ability to perform your work, UCOPAlert will deliver information and instructions to the personal contact vehicle of your choice (home phone, personal cellphone, and/or personal email).  This is an opt-in system. You must sign up to receive alerts. Register now.

On Thursday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m., UCOP Risk Services will test the UCOPAlert system by sending a message to the vehicles you have signed up to receive alerts on. Please look out for these messages. If you have verified your information and do not receive a test, contact UCOPAlert@ucop.edu.

Be earthquake-savvy!

To prepare yourself for the Great ShakeOut — and more importantly, a real emergency — take the following actions.

Secure your workplace. Use the Earthquake “Secure Your Space” Inspection Checklist from Risk Services to identify anything that may compromise your safety during an emergency.

Watch and learn. This helpful training video shares what to do before, during and after an earthquake.

Prepare for personal safety. UCOP Risk Services has organized a helpful round-up of emergency resources that you can use to prepare for your safety, and that of your loved ones, during an emergency.

Schedule a team presentation. Bob Charbonneau, director, Environmental & Emergency Services is available year-round to visit staff meetings and present advice about staying safe during emergencies. To schedule an appointment, contact Bob at Robert.Charbonneau@ucop.edu or (510) 987-9594.

Additional questions? Contact Risk Services at (510) 587-6087.
