Amy Nickerson, author of “How Do You See Us? Our Lived Realities of Being Viewed As a Threat”

On Jan. 15, from 12-1 p.m., please join Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) for a talk by Amy Nickerson, author of “How Do You See Us? Our Lived Realities of Being Viewed As a Threat.”

Nickerson’s book explores the impact of policing on African-Americans and communities of color, through the lens of her family’s problematic experiences with law enforcement. She and her husband, former NFL player and coach Hardy Nickerson, are UC Berkeley alumni. Their three children are also Cal graduates.

The author will speak on issues of racial injustice and systemic racism, sharing her feelings about race in America and exploring how and why tensions continue to escalate between African-Americans, police officers and even ordinary citizens intent on policing Black people. Using their own stories as a teaching tool, Amy and Hardy Nickerson are actively engaged in helping to guide conversations about and create solutions for racial and social justice. Their work has included includes presentations to U.S. and international law enforcement officials at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
