Tune in March 24 for Part 2 of the UC Campus Safety Symposium
Students, faculty, staff and administrators from across UC will gather online on March 24 for Part 2 of the UC Campus Safety Symposium. The virtual event will help inform a new presidential plan for improving campus safety and policing throughout UC.
All members of the UC community are invited to watch the event livestream, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The agenda, meeting materials, and a link to the livestream are posted online. The event is being held online to reduce risks from COVID-19.
Part 2 of the symposium will include a student-led panel, a progress report on the Campus Safety Task Forces and solutions-oriented panel discussions of the key themes that emerged during Part 1 of the Campus Safety Symposium, held February 2, 2021:
- Reconciliation, acknowledging past harms and understanding lived experiences
- Data access and transparency
- Re-examining and re-assigning roles of police and other UC personnel involved in the safety and well-being of members of the campus community
The discussion will help shape a new presidential plan that will inform campus safety and security plans to be implemented by the fall.
Separately, UC has recently begun a full review of its Universitywide Police Policies and Administrative Procedures, commonly referred to as the “Gold Book.” Comments are due by May 7. This review was required by university policy and recent state legislative changes. The review process will complement UC’s efforts to enact new best practices as a result of the UC Campus Safety Symposium and won’t preclude it from making significant long-term changes through a new presidential plan on campus safety.campus safety, systemwide
