Get ready for the Great ShakeOut this Thursday

On Thursday, Oct. 21, at 10:21 a.m. PT, UCOP will participate in the Great ShakeOut — our annual earthquake drill. We will send a test notification to your mobile devices through the UCOPAlert emergency notification system and will air an audio message within UCOP buildings.

Whether you’re working from the office or from home, get ready to drop, cover and hold on! You may feel a bit silly crouching under your workstation, but practice is an important part of building the muscle memory you’ll need to act swiftly during a real disaster.

Get UCOPAlerts via Text

It’s more important than ever for UCOP to reach you on your mobile devices in an emergency. To receive alerts via text, visit UCOPAlert.ucop.edu, select SMS/text as a device and enter your phone number: View detailed instructions (PDF). When UCOPAlert calls you with a voice message, the call will come from (866) 609-8026. Save this number as a contact in your phone now to prevent confusion in an emergency.

Get the MyShake app

Developed by the UC Berkeley Seismology Lab (Go, Bears!) and sponsored by the State of California Office of Emergency Services, the free MyShake mobile phone app is the first app that can provide seconds of warning before the ground starts to shake from a nearby quake… enough time to drop, cover and hold on to prevent injury. Get it today.

Build your emergency plan and kit

Please use the Great ShakeOut as an opportunity to prepare yourself and your loved ones in case of an earthquake. Take stock of your individual and family preparedness at home. Is your kit ready? This checklist can help!

If you have questions about UCOPAlert, or don’t receive the alert at 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 15, please contact ucopalert@ucop.edu.
