GUEA introduces new Confronting Racism speaker series

Dr. Tunette Powell, instructor and director of Equity, Inclusion and Community at the Mirman School at UCLA

The Confronting Racism speaker series is a new program of virtual learning opportunities organized and cosponsored by Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) and the Office of Workplace Inclusion and Belonging (OWIB). Inspired by President Drake and the work of the UCOP Anti-Racism Task Force, Confronting Racism brings UC lecturers from a broad array of fields to UCOP to highlight contemporary issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion.

All UCOP community members are encouraged to attend these events to broaden their perspective, learn how to adopt anti-racist principles in their own lives and engage in meaningful conversations with guest lecturers and colleagues.

Nov. 17, 12–1 p.m. (PT)
The concept of critical race theory has dominated mainstream media in recent months. What does this term really mean, and why has it become so controversial — especially in relation to elementary and secondary education policy? How can institutions like UC work to dismantle white supremacy at every level? Join Dr. Tunette Powell, instructor and director of Equity, Inclusion and Community at the Mirman School at UCLA, for fresh insights on this contemporary hot topic. Dr. Powell will be in conversation with Ghanya Thomas, IT diversity outreach coordinator for Information Technology Services and former co-chair, UCOP Black Staff and Faculty Organization.

On the Responsibility of Dreamers, featuring Alberto Ledesma, Ph.D.
Dec. 9, 12–1 p.m. (PT)
At what point does an undocumented immigrant become an American in the making? Join Dr. Alberto Ledesma, assistant dean for diversity, inclusion, and equity at UC Berkeley, for a candid conversation about his journey from undocumented immigrant to a leader at the University of California. Dr. Ledesma will share stories, musings and drawings from his 2017 memoir, “Diary of a Reluctant Dreamer, Undocumented Vignettes from a Pre-American Life.” Twenty-five randomly chosen participants will receive a copy of Dr. Ledesma’s book.

Information and dates will be available soon for 2022 events!
