About our panelists

Carry L. Byington, M.D., executive vice president and head of University of California Health (UCH), leads the University of California’s health enterprise — the largest academic health system in the U.S. — and is a professor of pediatrics at UCSF. Dr. Byington is an academic physician-scientist, with expertise in pediatrics and infectious diseases. As a clinician, she has worked to support health equity and to eliminate health disparities, especially for infants and children. As an educator, she has worked to increase inclusion in the health professional workforce. She has mentored more than 100 students, trainees and faculty members, the majority of which have come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. In her role as executive vice president for UCH, she has led the university’s systemwide response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Callale Concon is UCOP’s inaugural ombudsperson. She brings to this role a deep understanding of UC’s systemwide organizational structure, as well as campus life. A founding staff member at UC Merced, she was instrumental in establishing and developing service units, programs and culture for the campus’ Graduate Division. She is a Certified Organizational Ombudsman Practitioner™, state-certified mediator in two-party and complex disputes, certified professional coach, and certified in transformative facilitation and intercultural communications group dynamics. She holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational communications, and a master’s degree in higher education leadership and administration. Callale’s passion for helping individuals and groups to find pathways through conflicts is inspired by her journey as an immigrant and first-generation student.

Lalitha Sankaran is director of UCOP’s Office of Workplace Inclusion & Belonging, through which she leads equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB) and anti-racism efforts. She is focused on architecting a long-term unified strategy to advance EDIB and a culture of anti-racism. As an EDIB practitioner, Lalitha strategizes and implements system solutions to mitigate bias. Previously, she led the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the San Mateo Medical Center, where she also developed and implemented an EDIB strategic framework. At Kaiser Permanente, she led efforts to include cultural competency in patient demographic data and records. She is a first-generation Indian American woman who enjoys spending time with her children and values time to rest, reflect and recharge.

Van Williams is vice president of Information Technology Services and chief information officer for UC. He is the university’s primary IT leader and strategist, collaborating with location CIOs and other UC leaders. He also oversees IT strategic priorities for UCOP. Previously, Van was vice chancellor for information technology and strategic initiatives at UC Santa Cruz and the campus’s cyber-risk responsible executive, leading an $800M technology organization and 250 staff. Before UC, Van spent more than 15 years at New York University in various senior roles, including as chief information officer for NYU’s Stern School of Business, from which he received his master’s degree in business administration, specializing in finance, entrepreneurship and marketing. Van is deeply committed to higher education and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
