Confronting Racism: A Conversation About Antisemitism in the United States

Gregg Drinkwater, Ph.D., and Ethan Katz, Ph.D.

On Monday, May 22, Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA)  and the Office of Workplace Inclusion and Belonging will present the next event in the popular Confronting Racism speaker series.

A Conversation about Antisemitism in the United States will feature Gregg Drinkwater, Ph.D., and Ethan Katz, Ph.D., of the Antisemitism Education Initiative at UC Berkeley, in conversation with Kari Stewart, executive director of Academic Success Initiatives, GUEA.

Many people consider Judaism to be simply a religion and Jews to be adherents to that religious tradition; however, Jewish identity is more complex. Dr. Katz and Dr. Drinkwater will facilitate discussion about Jewish identity and antisemitism in the United States, exploring questions such as:

  • How do Jews occupy a complicated position in America’s racially charged political landscape? What are some of the challenges when considering Jews to be “simply white” or “not white?”
  • How should our knowledge of antisemitism inform the way we approach critical conversations about Israel and Palestine?
  • How might antisemitism fit into UCOP’s equity, diversity and inclusion framework?

Please watch the 11-minute video “Antisemitism in Our Midst: Past and Present” in advance of this session for additional insight and context.

About the Confronting Racism Speaker Series

The Confronting Racism speaker series is a program of virtual learning opportunities organized and cosponsored by Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs (GUEA) and the Office of Workplace Inclusion and Belonging (OWIB). Inspired by President Drake and the work of the UCOP Anti-Racism Task Force, Confronting Racism brings UC lecturers from a broad array of fields to UCOP to highlight contemporary issues related to equity, diversity and inclusion. All UCOP community members are encouraged to attend these events to broaden their perspective, learn how to adopt anti-racist principles in their own lives and engage in meaningful conversations with guest lecturers and colleagues.
