New Employee Orientation
Aug. 8, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Oakland)
Aug. 24, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Virtual)

Starting a new job or transitioning to a new location can be daunting. The UCOP New Employee Orientation is designed to facilitate your smooth transition to the organization. Topics will include UC and our history, UCOP overview, tools and resources, safety and compliance.

People Leaders Forum
Friday, Aug. 11, 1 – 2 p.m.
People Leaders Forums are a monthly opportunity for people managers to connect with one another to develop leadership skills, build community, share best practices, swap strategies for navigating current challenges and learn to better support themselves and their teams. This month’s session will focus on how to write a good job description for JDX and the market.

Leadership Fundamentals for Aspiring Leaders Information Session
Aug. 23, 2 – 2:30 p.m. | Sept. 5, 10 – 10:30 a.m.
If you have never been a manager or supervisor, but are interested in learning key aspects of leadership, time management and wellness, the UCOP Leadership Fundamentals for Aspiring Leaders program (LFP) might be just what you’re looking for. Created and facilitated by longtime, highly rated UCOP vendor Pierre Khawand, this cohort-based learning opportunity is designed to help participants develop and practice leadership, behavioral and wellness skills that are crucial in today’s information overload and fast-paced work environment. Join us at an information session to learn more!

Managing Implicit Bias: A Conversation
Aug. 16, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Have you completed UC Managing Implicit Bias, a six-course online training series designed to increase awareness of implicit bias and reduce its impact at the university? Join colleagues for a follow-up conversation. Together, we will discuss challenges and strategies for managing implicit bias. You’ll walk away with a greater understanding of your own implicit biases and your ability to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your life.

Mindfulness at UCOP
Aug. 18, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Less stress, enhanced awareness, better focus and improved health are some of the benefits shown in research studies on mindfulness. In this workshop, you’ll learn to reduce your stress and increase your effectiveness at work through simple mindfulness techniques.

Staff Talent Evaluation Process (STEP) training

UCOP STEP Training for New Employees: Define Criteria
Aug. 3, 10 – 11 a.m.
In this instructor-led training, we will expand on the materials presented in the STEP Fundamentals for Employees eCourse by going into detail on the first stage of STEP, called Define Criteria. You will practice writing goals and review strategies for choosing focus competencies.

GROWing your Check-In Conversations for Managers
Aug. 15, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
GROW is a simple meeting structure that supports a growth and development stance in employee-manager coaching and feedback conversations. This interactive session provides managers with an opportunity to discuss and practice using the GROW framework as a strategy and tool to support engaging STEP checkpoint conversations. The ecourse GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations is a prerequisite for this class.

GROWing your Check-In Conversations for Employees
Aug. 24, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
During this live virtual workshop, you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the GROW coaching framework, practice using it in conversation with your peers and get real-time feedback. The ecourse GROWing your Checkpoint Conversations is a prerequisite for this class.

Technology classes

Box Fundamentals
Aug. 9, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This course will give you an overview of Box, the cloud-based service that provides secure file storage and file sharing at UCOP.

UCOP Creating Accessible Documents
Aug. 15 & 22, 1 – 2:30 p.m.
In this two-part training we will provide you with all the information you need to create accessible Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF documents. The first session will focus on the principles of accessibility, how to generate accessible Microsoft Office documents and how to export these documents to PDFs. The second session will focus on Adobe Acrobat and how to edit or enhance accessibility within PDF files. We will be remediating a Word document during session one and a PDF during session two. While sample documents will be provided, please feel free to bring your own documents to practice on. Participants must attend both sessions.

Excel Introduction to Data Analysis
Aug. 24 & 31, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Microsoft Excel includes many tools that can help you analyze large amounts of data. By utilizing these tools, you can make informed decisions for a more strategic overall approach to your work. In this course, you’ll learn to use Excel data analysis tools, maximize the data included in your records and unlock the analysis power of Excel. Attendance at both sessions is required.

UCOP Safety – Active Attacker Training
Aug. 1, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn skills and strategies for how to respond if you are exposed to an active-attacker situation. The course will review real-life incidents and discuss options in the event of potential similar encounters. Safety expert Melissa Collins, program manager for Security, Risk and Resilience, will facilitate this live virtual class. Melissa joined UCOP after serving 20 years with the UC San Diego Police Department, retiring as a lieutenant.

Get to the Point
Aug. 23 & Aug. 25, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn how to get your messages across clearly and concisely in this two-session writing workshop filled with practical tips and tools. Communicate with more clarity to elicit enthusiastic responses and quick action from your readers.
