UCOP SERG Cochair Hilary Steinman
Senior Commodity Manager Hilary Steinman is cochair of the UCOP Sustainability Employee Resource Group (SERG) and she’s been a member of SERG since joining our organization. Learn what inspires Hilary at work, at home and within SERG.

Department/Unit: Systemwide Procurement/UC Finance

When you started working at UCOP: I started working at UCOP in February of 2022 so still pretty new!
What you do at UCOP in 5 words or less: Guide departments on financial decisions
The best part about working for OP: My lovely colleagues and the mission of the UC system
Something your colleagues don’t know about you: I am a huge New York Knicks fan, even though I’m an East Bay native (I lived in New York City for five years).
One weird fact about the town you grew up in: My hometown has a vibrant, albeit reclusive, commune still going strong from the 1960s. In high school we used to call them “purple people,” because the folks there live in a community of purple houses.
If you could have any job in the world (besides the one you have now), it would be: A beat reporter for a local newspaper in the 1970s

How long you’ve been a member: February 2022 (As long as I’ve been at UCOP!)
Your favorite part about belonging to this ERG: The community and our shared passion for the environment — it’s great to have a space where people who share common values can connect
Why you hope other colleagues will consider joining your ERG: We have such a great, hybrid-style community where we can chat, share and delve into sustainability in a fun and approachable way. It’s so nice to feel good about the planet, with all the negativity out there, so please come join us!
