Join the Latinx Staff Association (LaSA) for a Charla de la Tarde — afternoon chat — featuring UC Irvine Dean of Education Frances Contreras, Ph.D.

During this special Hispanic Heritage Month event, Dr. Conteras will provide an overview of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and their importance to UC and the state of California. She will also provide an update on ongoing efforts at UC Irvine, which has achieved HSI designation, toward serving Hispanic students and the community.

About Frances Contreras, Ph.D.

Dr. Frances Contreras is dean of the School of Education at UC Irvine, where she is also a professor. She previously served as associate vice chancellor for Faculty Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and a professor in the Department of Education Studies at UC San Diego. Dr. Contreras has more than 15 years of administrative leadership experience including the University of Washington College of Education, where she directed the higher education program.

Dr. Contreras’ research focuses on issues of equity and access for underrepresented students in the education pipeline and the role of public policy in ensuring student equity across a P-20 continuum. Dr. Contreras has been honored as an “Emerging Scholar” and the “Top 25 to Watch” among academics in the U.S. by Diverse Magazine.

As a first-generation college student and professor, Dean Contreras is the first Chicana/Latina dean to lead a school of education in the UC System.
