Celebrate Lunar New Year with APISA next week: Year of the Horse

All UCOP colleagues are warmly invited to join APISA for a hybrid Lunar New Year Celebration next Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 11, at the Oakland Broadway Conference Center and via Zoom. Come take a break from your day and welcome in the Year of the Horse with community, culture and great food.

The Year of the Horse symbolizes energy, strength and forward momentum, making it the perfect time to gather together and celebrate. The afternoon will feature lion dancing from the UC Berkeley Vietnamese Student Association, aka Cal VSA, a sampling of delicious foods, engaging cultural activities and a variety of vendors to explore.

Whether you’re familiar with Lunar New Year traditions or simply curious to learn more, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Stop by for a few minutes or stay for the entire celebration as we ring in the new year with colleagues from across UCOP.

We look forward to celebrating with you!

About the Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year is a widely celebrated holiday observed across many cultures in East and Southeast Asia and around the world. Often called the Spring Festival in China, it follows the lunar calendar and marks the beginning of a new year, with themes of renewal, gratitude and good fortune. The celebration traditionally lasts 15 days, beginning with the new moon and ending with the Lantern Festival.

Taking time off for Lunar New Year

Employees who choose to take time off to observe Lunar New Year should record this time as paid time off (PTO) in TRS. To help raise awareness about the significance of Lunar New Year, employees are encouraged to note that the time off is being taken to celebrate the holiday when submitting their PTO request.

APISA has developed a toolkit that includes sample PTO requests and out-of-office replies to support employees in communicating their observance of Lunar New Year.
