A visit to UC Santa Cruz

President Milliken recently spent a day at UC Santa Cruz, meeting with Chancellor Cynthia Larive, faculty, students and staff, and exploring the campus’ distinctive setting among the redwoods overlooking Monterey Bay. His visit included conversations about artificial intelligence and its implications for teaching and learning, a look at student projects ranging from rockets to a prototype F1 car at SlugWorks and a discussion about UC Santa Cruz’s strengths in astronomy and astrophysics.

“I have always thought that universities should be places where new technologies are tested, studied, debated, and improved,” Milliken wrote, reflecting on conversations about AI with faculty, campus leaders and students. He shared the importance of sustaining the people and resources that support cutting-edge research, and how UC Santa Cruz reflects the breadth of the University of California, from hands-on student innovation to research exploring some of the biggest unanswered questions about the universe.

Meeting UC Student Leaders

At the annual Student Leadership Summit, President Milliken had the opportunity to spend time with student leaders from across UC, including members of the UC Council of Presidents, the UC Student Association, and the UC Graduate & Professional Council, as well as the student regent and student regent-designate.
