The background of FAHM

Since 1992, October has been designated as FAHM by the Filipino American National Historical Society. The month of October holds significance in our history. The first recorded Filipinos arrived in what is now Morro Bay, California, on Oct. 18, 1597 — 429 years ago! This month also commemorates Larry Itliong, born on Oct. 25, 1913, who played a vital role in the United Farm Workers’ Movement in California.

Today, the Filipino American population has grown to over 4.1 million, making it the second-largest Asian American group in the United States. From activism to academia, the arts to public service, Filipino Americans have played a vital role in shaping our society,  sharing their vibrant culture, leadership and innovation — all of which continue to contribute to the diverse fabric of the UC experience.

APISA looks forward to honoring the rich history and enduring contributions of the Filipino American community with you all!
