Friday, Jan. 23: Astrophysicist, educator and inventor Hakeem Oluseyi
Join Education Partnerships for another event in its speaker series with a talk by astrophysicist, educator, science communicator and inventor Hakeem Oluseyi, 12 to 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23, in Franklin Lobby 1. (Click link to add event to your calendar.)
Oluseyi’s talk, entitled “Helping Students to Reach for the Stars,” will trace his own successful career back to his origins in the rough Ninth Ward of New Orleans to become the first in his family to go to college. He’ll discuss how we, as parents, educators and community members, can support young students to find their own successful paths.
An associate professor of physics and space sciences at the Florida Institute of Technology, Oluseyi is currently the Martin Luther King Visiting Professor of Physics at MIT and holder of eight U.S. patents. He often appears as an expert in his field on major television networks, as well as programs on the Science Channel and Discovery International, and is a 2012–13 TED fellow. He holds bachelor’s degrees in physics and mathematics from Tougaloo College and a master’s and doctorate in physics from Stanford.
A light lunch will be served at the event. For more details, please contact Education Partnerships at edpartnerships@ucop.edu.
