RGPO brown bag: E-cigarettes – The Vapor This Time?
Join the Research Grants Program Office when Phillip S. Gardiner, Dr. P.H., speaks about e-cigarettes. His talk will cover their origin and explosive growth, the chemical composition of the e-liquid and the resulting aerosol, a review of the literature on e-cigarettes as a cessation tool, and de-normalization of smoking and regulation (or lack thereof) of e-cigarettes.

Gardiner is a public health activist, administrator, evaluator and researcher. For the past 25 years, he has worked on studies ranging from hypertension, multiculturalism and AIDS, to breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes and smoking. Gardiner received his doctorate in behavioral sciences from the UC Berkeley, where he focused on youth violence as a public health issue. Throughout his research career, he has maintained his community activism to address racial disparities in health through writing, organizing, evaluating and public speaking. For the past 15 years, Gardiner has lectured around the country on African American health disparities generally and menthol smoking in the black community, particularly.
Currently, Gardiner is the policy and regulatory sciences program officer for the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) at UCOP, where he oversees the science associated with e-cigarettes. Gardiner speaks regularly around the country on banning menthol cigarettes and regulating electronic cigarettes.
