UC Oakland Partnership call for volunteers: Help build a school garden

The UC Oakland Partnership is hosting a volunteer opportunity for employees who want to help an Oakland school and maybe get a little dirt under their fingernails while they’re at it.
Event: Build a community garden
Where: Brookfield Elementary School, 401 Jones Ave.
Date: Friday, May 15, 2015
Time: Noon to 4 p.m.
Brookfield Elementary School is the only elementary school in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) that doesn’t have a community garden. The OUSD School-Based Garden Education Program seeks to provide urban children with access to healthy and locally produced food, an understanding of food systems and the natural cycle, and a project-based learning alternative to testing-based instruction. The hands-on experience offers character-building opportunities and gives students a sense of connection to their local community.
If you are interested in helping to build a community garden at Brookfield Elementary, email Brendan O’Callaghan by May 10. No building and/or gardening experience is required; instruction, tools and resources will be provided by the OUSD garden coordinator. This opportunity is limited to 20 volunteers.
Please indicate whether you plan to drive to the event and are willing to transport other employees as well as the number of passengers your vehicle can accommodate.
President Napolitano has approved four hours paid time per month for employees to volunteer with the UC Oakland Partnership, but be sure to get approval from your supervisor before signing up.
