President Napolitano kicks off author series

salk-coverPresident Janet Napolitano, a prolific reviewer of books, has joined the Commonwealth Club to host a series of author interviews. Her first interview, on Aug. 19, was with Dr. Charlotte Jacobs, professor emerita of medicine at Stanford University and the author of Jonas Salk: A Life.

You can hear the program here.

Salk, a physician-researcher, changed human history by inventing the first polio vaccine. His work saved countless lives and helped shape the medical field as it is known today.

President Napolitano and Jacobs discussed the Salk biography and delved into his life and legacy as part of a larger discussion about the best practices of vaccinations, preventing pandemics and saving lives.

The New York Times called Jacobs’s book “science writing as its best.”

“The Salk trials rank among the greatest successes of modern medicine, and Jacobs tells the story as well as it’s ever been told,” the Times said.
