UCOP recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. During this time, advocates work to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities around the nation about how to prevent sexual assault. UCOP’S remaining events in recognition of this month are:
Tuesday, April 19 from 2 to 3 p.m. Webinar with Mari Knuth-Bouracee, M.A., Director of the CARE Advocacy Office at UC Berkeley. Knuth-Bouracee will speak about sexual violence awareness, prevention and support.
Wednesday, April 27 is Denim Day. The national Denim Day movement was triggered by a 1990s ruling in which the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt the victim’s jeans were tight and concluded she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against misconceptions around sexual assault. To learn more about this event, visit the National Denim Day webpage.
Here at OP, the Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers confidential emotional support and other resources to employees who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence and stalking. To access the FSAP or learn about other resources, visit the UCOP webpages on sexual violence response and prevention.
To make a report of sexual violence or sexual harassment, you can contact UCOP’s Sexual Harassment Officer Katya Nottie at Katya.Nottie@ucop.edu.
Campuses around the UC system also have events and activities planned in April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
