Old photos, records unearthed in treasure hunt celebrating UC’s 150th birthday

The winner of the treasure hunt is Executive Assistant Jenne Vargas-Maes, who submitted several photos of former President Charles J. Hitch, his farewell address and photo negatives from the 1960s and 1970s.

Records Management received a lot of very interesting items as the result of its treasure hunt!

In honor of UC’s 150th birthday, Records Management asked employees to poke around their departments for any cool, important history.

Among the items submitted were a 1948 edition of Life Magazine that had a photographic essay on the University of California, and academic plans for UC and the state of California from 1965-1975. The oldest materials received came from Admissions, which included meeting minutes from 1915 and lists of high schools that UC would accept students from.

Other noteworthy materials were a 1976 administrative information systems task force report, and a 1987 Prism user manual on how to operate the regents minute database.

The winner of the competition is Executive Assistant Jenne Vargas-Maes, who submitted materials on former President Charles J. Hitch in a variety of formats. She had several photos of him, his farewell address, and photo negatives dating back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Records Management thanks everyone who submitted, and notes that they will all receive a small prize.

As always, if you have any interesting historic materials for UCOP or UC, please submit them to the Central Records Collection at records@ucop.edu, or call (510) 987-0399 for more information.
