Recognize National Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout April
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), and UC is joining higher education partners across the nation in focusing on sexual-assault prevention and education efforts, showing support for survivors, educating community members about consent and ensuring that the next generation fosters attitudes that promote healthy relationships, equality and respect.
The U.S. has celebrated SAAM each April since 2001. Supporters wear teal ribbons to raise awareness. The theme for this year’s SAAM is “I Ask” — a phrase that empowers all of us to put consent into practice by emphasizing that asking for consent is a normal and necessary part of sex. Learn more about SAAM from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.
How to participate in SAAM
Wear teal throughout April — in particular on April 7
Wearing a teal ribbon throughout the month of April demonstrates your support for SAAM. On Tuesday, April 7, 2020 — the SAAM Day of Action — wear a teal ribbon, shirt or other accessory to support SAAM.
Participate in Denim Day on April 29
Wednesday, April 29, 2020 is Denim Day — a movement triggered by a 1990s ruling in which the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans. Today, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against misconceptions surrounding sexual assault. Plan to participate, and learn more about this awareness event.
