Research shows that about 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer — and Black women are most likely to die from the disease. The UCOP Black Staff and Faculty Organization (BSFO) held its first-ever health week, from Oct. 25 – 29, 2021, featuring a variety of presentations focused on breast cancer education and awareness.

Expert Talk: Dr. Cheryl Ewing (UCSF Health)
Monday, Oct. 25
Dr. Ewing spoke about breast cancer risk factors, clinical trials, and other important health topics relevant to the Black community.
Expert Presentation: Dr. Ryland Gore
Tuesday, Oct. 26
Dr. Gore shared her expertise in breast surgical oncology and demonstrated the process of a breast self-examination.
“LIFE INTERRUPTED” Documentary and Discussion
Wednesday, Oct. 27
This documentary features eye-opening and empowering stories of several diverse breast cancer survivors, including the filmmaker. We no longer have access to streaming rights, but you can purchase personal home use streaming for $12 or download the facilitator’s guide.

Friday, Oct. 29
Four breast cancer survivors shared their unique perspectives and stories of survival. We were honored to listen and learn from each of them during this final BSFO Health Week event.
