APISA presents author Catherine Ceniza Choy, Ph.D.

Catherine Ceniza Choy, Ph.D., author of, “Asian American Histories of the United States”

On Thursday, September 29, from 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m., the Asian Pacific Islander Staff Association (APISA) will present a special chat with Catherine Ceniza Choy, Ph.D., professor and associate dean of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and justice in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society at UC Berkeley.

Professor Choy will discuss her latest book,  “Asian American Histories of the United States,” which features the themes of anti-Asian hate and violence, and the erasure of Asian American history. The book explores Asian American resistance to what has been omitted in a nearly 200-year history of Asian migration, labor and community formation in the U.S. Choy argues that Asian American experiences are essential to any understanding of U.S. history and the country’s existential crises of the early 21st century.

All UCOP staff are invited to join our volunteer readers who will post questions for the chat.

Thank you APISA for organizing this event! I’m looking forward to attending. Here’s another lecture from this spring hosted by Dr. Elizabeth Alexander of the Mellon Foundation on Chinese American History that may be of interest. She is a wonderful facilitator and chooses amazing topics to explore: https://mellon.org/news-blog/articles/video-chinese-american-history-asian-american-experiences-asl-interpretation/
