Julie Lewis joins UCOP as Systemwide Title IX director
President Drake sent the following message to all UCOP staff on Dec. 12, 2022:
Dear UCOP Colleagues,
I’m pleased to announce that Julie Lewis is joining UC Office of the President as the Systemwide Title IX director following a months-long nationwide search. Julie’s first day will be Dec. 19.
In this role, Julie will lead the Systemwide Title IX Office in providing direction and support for the Title IX offices across the system. She will work with the locations to implement systemwide initiatives and best practices in harassment prevention and response.
Julie is joining us from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and CSU Stanislaus, where she has served as associate director and deputy Title IX coordinator at both institutions simultaneously for the last several years. She has deep experience as an attorney, having spent many years representing school districts, school boards, universities and municipalities in various legal roles.
She has a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northwestern University.
Julie has the passion, dedication, experience and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, anti-discrimination and equal protection that will serve the university well in this position. I am confident that Julie will continue to build upon the strong foundation and positive impact of the Systemwide Title IX Office.
I also want to especially thank Isabel Dees, deputy director of the Systemwide Title IX Office, who stepped in as the interim director over the last six months and helped shepherd important work, such as the issuance of the university’s response to the Department of Education’s Proposed Title IX Regulations.
I am grateful to the members of the systemwide search committee who gave their time and expertise to this important appointment.
Please join me in welcoming Julie as the Systemwide Title IX director.
Sincerely,
Michael V. Drake, M.D.
President, University of California
