OP celebrates UC Walks with giant feet, bean bags and oranges
April showers bring May walkers! After a rainy winter, UCOP staff welcomed a sunny spring day for the eighth annual UC Walks event on Wednesday, May 17.
More than 250 Oakland employees enjoyed a variety of activities in Lakeside Park, including a basketball challenge, bigfoot race (with three people strapped to giant wooden feet), bean bag toss, horseshoe game and photo booth. UC benefits vendors such as Anthem, Kaiser, Health Net, Western Health Advantage and Optum hosted booths to share health and wellness tips and hand out exercise aids like stretching bands. After thoroughly enjoying the fun activities and healthy snacks, OP staff members were led through warm-up exercises before walking a portion of Lake Merritt together.
In Riverside, 150 UCPath Center employees celebrated UC Walks by teaming up with UC Riverside (UCR) staff who work in the same building. A local gym owner donated time to lead the group in easy stretching exercises and offer tips for making office life healthier. UC benefits vendors donated raffle prizes, and for their energizing snack, staff enjoyed a special UC treat – oranges grown by UCR!

UC Walks is a free, systemwide event that promotes walking as a form of exercise and encourages an active, healthy lifestyle. Participants received a free T-shirt, courtesy of UC’s medical and behavioral health plans. Some locations also offered additional activities. Big thanks to our local Human Resources staff who organized UCOP’s activities at both locations!
Great article and photos of UCOP staff! Thanks to all that helped organize the fun event.
This is a great UC tradition! It’s one of the rare times we get together across departments for enjoyment and health. I appreciate the organizational commitment to this event.
Great shirts this year! A very fun event!
