Deadline this week for submitting performance reviews

This Friday, Sept. 16, is the deadline for UCOP performance reviews for 2010–11, which are required to ensure that every employee gets current feedback on his or her performance.

Building a performance-based culture has been a top priority for UCOP. The effort this year has been to give everyone — both supervisors and employees — plenty of notice and incentive for making performance management a daily routine rather than a yearly drudge.

“Ideally, reviews should be part of an ongoing conversation between supervisors and employees about competencies and performance standards, goals and expectations,” says UCOP Local HR Executive Director John Fox. “Every employee deserves to receive regular feedback and guidance to build future success.”

Many UCOP department managers say the performance review process is most successful when the entire department works together on defining competencies and standards unique to their work and training their employees as a group. This cultivates a common understanding for everyone.

Timely completion of performance reviews is particularly important this year with the merit program recently announced by President Yudof. Under the OP program, individual merit increases will be based on a positive, documented 2010–11 performance appraisal.

For anyone still needing help, UCOP HR offers tools, all available on its Performance Evaluation Resources website that can help get you started.

Resources for managers include the Manager Toolkit: 10 Keys to Delivering Performance Reviews. Accessible through the UC Learning Center, this online document summarizes research from the Corporate Leadership Council on providing effective formal feedback.

Resources for employees include Employee Role in Performance Appraisals and Preparing for Your Performance Appraisal, also available through the UC Learning Center. These online tools can be reviewed quickly and help employees participate in the performance appraisal process.

Most important, Fox says, if you are an employee who has not yet gotten any word about your performance review, make an appointment today to discuss the process with your supervisor. And use the available tools to keep track of goals, performance and achievements throughout the coming year to facilitate next year’s review.

Also available are forms for documenting performance and self-assessments, policies, guidelines, FAQs and a video of the June 20 brown bag with Fox, HR Vice President Dwaine Duckett and Learning and Development Coordinator Linda Klink.
