Q&A session on budget addresses “uncertain” times
Nathan Brostrom, UC executive vice president for business operations, described the difficult and uncertain budget situation of the state, the University of California and UCOP and took questions from the audience at a brown bag Q&A session, held April 12 at the Franklin Building.
About 100 UCOP leadership and staff attended, and about 250 live viewers watched from their computers via Ustream TV. If you missed the event, you can view it in the Ustream archives or see the story that appeared in the March 29 issue of Link.
In brief, Brostrom discussed OP’s plan to cut about $50 million from its annual operating costs through:
- targeted cuts to programs that duplicate work being done on campuses
- reductions in travel, equipment purchases, consulting services and technology upgrades
- returning oversight of some programs to the campuses in an effort to give UC chancellors as much budget flexibility as possible.
OP leadership expects to have more detailed information about how the budget will affect specific OP departments and programs by the May UC Regents meeting.
