Second annual UC Walks Day is Wednesday, May 18
Remember to wear your walking shoes to work on Wednesday, May 18.
For the second year, UCOP will participate in UC Walks Day, established in 2010 as a systemwide health and wellness event to mark National Employee Health & Fitness Day. UC Wellness coordinators at all UC locations are participating.
John Fox, executive director of UCOP Local Human Resources, will lead the UCOP pack this year. Participants will meet at Snow Park, at the corner of Harrison and 20th Streets. The walk will begin at 12:15 p.m. and proceed along Oakland’s Lake Merritt, then return to the park at 12:45 p.m. for a raffle.
Walkers are eligible to receive a free T-shirt; if you would like to participate, please e-mail sherry.perocier@ucop.edu to reserve your shirt by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.
Kaiser participants may pick up their shirts in 705 Kaiser, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday May 17, the day before the walk. Franklin participants may pick up shirts right before the walk, between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m., in the Franklin Lobby.
UC Walks specifically targets faculty and staff, though some locations are also opening the event to students.
“The idea behind UC Walks is to raise awareness for including 30 minutes of walking or general fitness in your day,” says Trish Ratto, manager of Health*Matters at UC Berkeley and one of the event’s coordinators. “It is also a great way to build community.”
StayWell and Kaiser Permanente, UC’s wellness program providers, are providing free T-shirts to participants at each location while supplies last.
While this is a systemwide initiative, each location will be hosting different events and celebrating in different ways. For example, at UC Riverside, Associate of the Chancellor Karen White, Ph.D., P.T., will lead a 30-minute walk.
Last year more than 3,700 faculty and staff members participated in a UC Walk event at their location.
