Get the facts on UPTE campaign to unionize professional staff

The University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union is asking administrative professionals to sign materials about union representation.
Some individuals have received materials in the mail asking for signed cards to be returned to UPTE, authorizing the union to be “my exclusive collective bargaining representative for the purpose of meeting and negotiating with the University of California over compensation, benefits and other terms of employment.”
The University of California neither encourages nor discourages union membership and supports your right to decide what you think is right for you.
Before you sign anything, it is important to be aware of these facts:
- Your signature is your “vote.” Read carefully before you sign anything.
- Union cards or petitions are not just an expression of interest. Signing them may mean unionization for all employees, including those who did not provide their signatures or want a union.
- An election for unionization is not guaranteed. If more than 50 percent plus one member of the targeted group signs the card to support UPTE, no election will be held.
Be sure you understand what it means to sign a union card, petition or other literature. Make an informed decision about how union representation could affect you before you sign anything.
