National Bike Month, Bike to Work Day: It’s not too late to join the action
Celebrate the power of the bicycle to get you where you want to go and promote a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
May is National Bike Month, and you can join bike commuters at UCOP and elsewhere by biking to work on Bike to Work Day or by joining the Team Bike Challenge all month.
On Bike to Work Day 2013, which falls on this Thursday, May 9, you will find bike energizer stations located throughout the East Bay and San Francisco, where you can get refreshments along your route.
Also that day, the 20th annual pancake breakfast will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. at Oakland City Hall, with free valet bike parking, free day passes to Club One Fitness Center and raffles. There will be a Bike Away from Work party in Old Oakland from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
UCOP encourages bike commuting by offering showers and secure bike parking in the Franklin Street employee garage and at the Kaiser Building. (See more below about access.)
During National Bike Month, you can also join the Team Bike Challenge, in which teams of two to five people compete to log the most miles throughout the month of May. Last year cyclists at UCOP biked more than 3,000 miles and took over 500 trips by bike in the month of May.
It’s not too late to form a team of your own. If you’re interested in joining the challenge, sign up now (create an account to register your team under UCOP) or contact Ryan Chan at Ryan.Chan@ucop.edu.
To have Franklin bike-parking authorization added to your UCOP employee ID card, contact the Work Management Center at buildingservices@ucop.edu. Processing may take a few hours, so be sure to arrange this before biking to work. At Franklin, showers and day-use lockers are by the elevator on the 9th floor. (Bring your own toiletries and towel.)
To get Kaiser building access to parking and showers, contact Building Management at KaiserCenter@Swigco.com.
