Children’s book drive continues through Friday, Aug. 16

Do you have any used children’s books that might brighten up a child’s day?
The Northern California office of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is conducting its fifth annual summer book drive for low-income children living in the Oakland area. UCOP’s Franklin building is proud to participate in this initiative aimed at helping children improve their reading skills.
The book drive is part of President Barack Obama’s summer “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” program. The goal is to get books into the hands of children who have little or no access to reading materials during the summer and help them retain what they learned in school.
You will find a clearly marked white bin in the lobby, where you can deposit your gently used children’s books (appropriate for up to age 18) through Friday, Aug. 16; no encyclopedias, textbooks or library discards, please.
After the drive, the East Bay Children’s Book Project will distribute the books to disadvantaged children through food banks, homeless shelters, pediatric clinics, youth service offices, literacy programs and other community organizations.
Volunteers are also needed to help sort and transport the donated books in a national service event on Saturday, Sept. 7. Interested in participating? Contact book drive coordinators Adrian Arnold and Maeve Harrington at 510-637-1746 or aarnold.guest@cns.gov.
