Don’t miss “At Berkeley,” showing this week on KQED and at PFA

Frederick Wiseman’s four-and-a-half-hour documentary “At Berkeley” — which gives an insider’s view of UC’s oldest campus through faculty meetings, classes, sporting events, campus protests and more — is airing this week on KQED’s Independent Lens series.

If you missed the initial broadcast on Channel 9 TV last night, check the PBS listing for additional showings this week on KQED’s digital channels. The film will also be showing at Pacific Film Archive on the Berkeley campus this Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m.

The film, veteran filmmaker Wiseman’s 38th documentary, debuted at the Venice Film Festival last September and has been gathering acclaim as it makes its way through the film festival circuit and limited theatrical screenings.

I recorded it Monday night thinking I would watch it in 1 hour increments this week. Couldn’t turn it off last night and watched the whole thing. It is an amazingly wide view of Berkeley that goes way past the stereotypes and external views we normally see. Intelligent discussions in classrooms, engaging professors, senior administration mtgs, a discussion among vets who are now students, acappela singing group, swing dancing, poetry reading, astrophysics, faculty meetings, campus grounds, the campanile, the Marching Band, Occupy protest. It made me proud – once again – to work for this amazing place.
