10-second bio: Meet Karen Basey, playwright who hails from El Pinole

Karen BaseyName: Karen V. Basey

Title: Associate HR Business Partner (AHRBP)

Department: UCOP Local Human Resources

Location: 6th floor, Franklin

When I started working at UCOP: I started in April 1986, transferred to UC Berkeley in 1989 and returned to UCOP in 1994.

What I do for UCOP in five words or less: Partner with departments on various HR activities

Best part about working for OP: UC is continuously evolving, which makes it an exciting place to work. The challenges UC faces create an opportunity for staff to provide creative solutions on how UC can operate more efficiently. As an AHRBP, I have the opportunity to experience the passion and commitment from UCOP staff in supporting the mission of the university as well as understanding the significant role it plays in the lives of Californians and the nation.

Something you don’t know about me: In my spare time, I love to write plays. I recently wrote and produced a musical, Take Me Back! The Musical, which ran last September at Oakland’s Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts on Alice Street.

One weird fact about the town I grew up in: During my junior high and high school years, I grew up in Pinole, Calif. Pinole is a type of flour made from seeds of chia, maize, some grasses and herbs. The name Pinole was given by Spanish explorers who were fed pinole in a local village; they called it El Pinole.

If I could have any job in the world (besides the one I have now) I would be: A Broadway producer and writer!
