10-second bio: Julian Martinez knows life from inside a torpedo tube

Julian Martinez

Name: Julian Martinez

Title: Director of Resource Development and Marketing

Department/Unit: Education Partnerships/MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) program

Location: 7th floor, Kaiser

When I started working at UCOP: October 2012

What I do for UCOP in five words or less: Resource development for MESA, California’s STEM solution

Best part about working for OP: The best part of working for OP is that I get to pursue my passion for helping increase the number of students from underserved, low-income and first-generation families to become science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals through UC’s MESA program.

Something you don’t know about me: As a senior project engineer for the Department of the Navy, I slept inside a torpedo tube on an Aegis Class Destroyer while out to sea for three months. They had run out of berths. It was quiet, clean and very dark. A cruise ship it was not.

One weird fact about the town I grew up in: El Paso, Texas, is home to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), formerly Texas Western College. In 1966, at the height of the civil rights movement, Texas Western’s starting five black players defeated an all-white Kentucky team to win that year’s NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championship. UTEP remains the only Texas university to have won a men’s NCAA basketball championship.

If I could have any job in the world (besides the one I have now) I would be: I’d own the best sports bar and brew pub in Oakland.

    Hello Julian,

I knew that fact about Texas Western College. My Dad attended and played basketball there!
