Time’s running out to apply for UCOP Leadership Development Program

OP’s Leadership Development Program, designed to develop a diverse pool of future leaders from within OP, is taking applications until Friday, April 11.

Now in its third year, the program is for strong performers who manage people or projects, have been in their current positions for at least one year and can take on additional responsibility. It recently graduated its second cohort of 15 up-and-comers at UCOP.

The nine-month program requires a commitment of 1 to 2 days per month, to be spent in workshops, case studies and other activities, as well as additional time outside of class on project work. Be sure to submit nominations and applications by the April 11 deadline.

The program brings together professional facilitators and top OP leaders—including President Janet Napolitano—to  share with participants their management experience and apply their leadership skills in an OP-specific setting.

Sessions occur once monthly, starting Tuesday, May 13, when President Napolitano, Executive Vice President Nathan Brostrom, Provost Aimée Dorr and Senior Vice President Jack Stobo will give an overview of leadership at UCOP.

In addition to leadership, the curriculum includes courses in working in a public institution, management, financial operations, decision making and the budget process, the university culture, collaboration with campuses, managing change, communicating effectively and group projects.

Applicants may be nominated by their manager or other nominator or may nominate themselves. Because of the heavy time commitment required, participants must also have the support of their supervisor and department.

Participants will be selected by a committee based on current performance and potential for growth in the organization.

For the complete program schedule, requirements and the nomination/application form, see the Leadership Development Program website or contact Linda Klink at linda.klink@ucop.edu or 510-987-0673.
