10-second bio: Meet Dan Scannell, your new OP Staff Assembly chair
Name: Dan Scannell
Title: Public Records Act/Conflict of Interest Coordinator
Department/Unit: Office of the General Counsel
Location: 5th floor, Franklin
When I started working at UCOP: March 2012
What I do for UCOP in five words or less: Problem solver
Best part about working for OP: Everything! First, everyone is very friendly and kind. Second, the level of knowledge and professionalism within the organization is very impressive, and I enjoy working on complex legal and policy issues and advising campuses and UCOP. Finally, I’m the new chair of OP Staff Assembly, which is devoted to improving the workplace for staff. (So if you have any ideas on how OPSA can improve things at UCOP, please contact me at Dan.Scannell@ucop.edu!)
Something you don’t know about me: I like to keep busy: I play soccer, run, play guitar and piano, do home remodeling projects, etc. But my apparent claim to fame is the Tiki Bar in my backyard. It’s just a shack, but it won an online “Best Bar” contest last year, beating out a bunch of real bars (because my friends thought it would be amusing if it won and voted en masse).
One weird fact about the place I grew up in: Weird and not-so-weird facts about Oakland:
- Lake Merritt was the first official wildlife refuge in the United States (1870).
- Children’s Fairyland (which abuts the lake) was among the amusement parks used by Walt Disney to design Disneyland.
If I could have any job in the world (besides the one I have now) I would be: An unassuming philanthropist. It would be great to leave large anonymous donations for needy charities, or leave a $1,000 tip at a divey diner. A lobbyist for solar energy/green energy would be second place.
Congrats on your new position Dan and thanks for sharing your interesting background. I love the idea of a $1,000 tip. I was at a Starbucks drivethru and the person in front of me paid my bill; very cool. I have paid it forward a few times since then and it always feels awesome. You just reminded me to do it again soon and to leave a big tip to a well-deserving person.
Congratulations Dan! I can see you are a problem solver by the picture they used of you…there’s a man who will get things done.
Congratulations, Dan! Great picture, and terrific vision.
Congratulations Dan! Well deserved!!!!
