UCOP’s eAppraisal helps simplify performance reviews
UCOP’s move to eAppraisal, the online performance management system, has been successful, with helpful features that have standardized the performance appraisal process and gotten reviews completed more quickly.
Department feedback on the system has been positive overall. The online system is easy to use, and it provides the ability to maintain multiple versions of reviews, store documents to your personal page, and get automated reminders to stay on schedule.
About 92 percent of performance reviews were complete by December 2014, said Learning and Development Manager Linda Klink. That’s three months earlier than 2012–13, when UCOP was using a paper-based system.
Since the end of this year’s cycle, HR has received useful feedback from both employees and managers and is already planning changes to streamline the process and make it more effective.
“Some people were confused about goals,” Klink said, “and some felt uncomfortable rating themselves on the competencies as part of the self-appraisal.” But goal setting is one of the most important advantages eAppraisal offers, she added, because you can record your goals and revise or update them in the system.
“Make sure you have goals, and use the tool to record their status,” Klink said. “That will make everything easier for the next evaluation.” Employees valued the part of the process requiring review of all appraisals by second-level managers.
President Napolitano last month singled out eAppraisal as one of the five most notable achievements of the Efficiency Review, citing how much easier it is to track performance, reduce paper use and storage needs, and standardize the process across the organization.
