The survey shows: UC staff has high regard for UC as employer

Results of a recent systemwide staff engagement survey show UC non-represented staff regards the university as a good employer.

In late March and April, about 20,000 randomly selected staff received the survey asking their opinions about several work-related categories from their work relationships and supervision to career development and organizational change.

Forty-six percent completed the survey and provided more than 5,000 comments.

The survey, which aims to help UC better understand the views, experiences and needs of non-represented staff on topics related to working at UC, showed improvement in employee opinions in most categories compared to a similar survey in 2012.

More employees had a more favorable opinion in 2015 than in 2012 about their ability to communicate with their supervisor and other leaders, regard for the university and career development opportunities.

“The fact that UC staff have a more favorable opinion about our workplace in 2015 than in 2012 is a testament to all the hard work that was completed after the 2012 staff survey,” said Dan Scannell, OP Staff Assembly chairman. Staff Engagement work groups identified ways to improve communications, increase career development opportunities and progress in other workplace areas. “Staff Assembly worked closely with UCOP departments to implement those recommendations — it was a huge team effort, and the positive survey findings validate that hard work.”

But there are still opportunities for improvement, particularly regarding change management and change-related communications and supervisor support for training.

Systemwide Human Resources has shared the results with UC President Janet Napolitano, and she, in turn, has shared them with chancellors and other senior leaders.

The survey was developed by the Council of University of California Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) in collaboration with systemwide Human Resources’ Employee Relations and Towers Watson, a national firm specializing in workforce opinion survey research.

Union-represented employees did not participate in the survey because UC receives their feedback through their union representatives during the collective bargaining process.

In the next few months, OP Staff Assembly will be working with local Human Resources and OP leaders to communicate the results and generate ideas for improvements based on the survey findings.

Watch for more information about the survey results at UCOP in the coming months.
