A Shout Out to our Office of the General Counsel (OGC) colleagues Charles Robinson, general counsel vice president, Karen Petrulakis, chief deputy general counsel, and Margaret Wu, managing counsel, for their 2016 Impact Award as Legal Department of the Year in the category of Litigation, Large Companies.

Bestowed by the legal publication The Recorder, the award recognized the depth and breadth of legal work that OGC performs in service to the university. Of special note for 2016 was the team’s success in winning two major cases for UC related to the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA) — one of which threatened to significantly change how UC medical centers stored patient records. Petrulakis noted that this particular legal victory protects patients by not giving doctors “too many hoops to jump through” simply to access a patient’s medical information, including in emergencies.
