Help local students: Volunteer at the Oakland Youth Careers Expo
Last year UCOP staff members from 10 different departments collaborated on the successful design and staffing of two well-received interactive booths at the annual Oakland Youth Careers Expo. More than 1,200 high school students from the Oakland Unified School District attended the event at the Oakland Marriott, interacting with 80 local employers and exploring myriad career paths.
The volunteers from UCOP enjoyed the day as much as the students did. Robert Koster of the IT Service Desk said of the students, “It was a joy interacting with them,” while another volunteer summed up the day by saying, “It was very inspiring and I left with a sense of optimism from getting to interact with the generation who is going to take us forward.”
UCOP’s ITS department will be sponsoring a booth again this year and needs staff who can volunteer for short shifts of 30-45 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Volunteers will manage booths, talk to students about IT careers, run games and give away prizes. Help is also needed before the event to create materials.
Not in IT? Your department or division could sponsor its own booth at the Expo for a small registration fee. See this page for more information.
This year’s Oakland Youth Careers Expo will be held:
