Plan ahead: Golden State Warriors parade in downtown Oakland this Thursday
To celebrate their NBA championship win, the city of Oakland is hosting a victory parade and rally for the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, June 15. Up to a million spectators are expected to attend. This event will significantly impact OP staff who work in downtown Oakland due to extensive street closures, increased use of public transit and the large number of pedestrians.
The city is expecting that a large area of downtown Oakland (shown on this map) will be difficult to drive through all day Thursday, beginning in the very early hours. Once the downtown area fills up – which may occur before the time you normally arrive at work — vehicles will not be allowed in until the streets re-open after the parade and rally.
Please speak to your supervisor if you would prefer to telecommute on Thursday.
Street closures and driving in downtown Oakland
If you are coming in to work, here is what you need to know:
The parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday and will be followed by a rally at 12:15 p.m. Many streets near OP offices will be closed on Thursday starting at 6 a.m. and will remain closed until 6 p.m. If you need to work in the office, we advise arriving early.
Please read the city’s press release detailing all the street closures as well as the impact to public transit. Some streets have already been closed and more will close on Wednesday.
Impact on UCOP buildings
1111 Franklin: We expect to offer normal access to the building and garage on Thursday, but you will need to let the police posted at 12th St. and Franklin know that you are a UCOP employee entering the garage in order to be let through the barricade. To exit the garage during the street closure, you will need to turn right on Franklin St., which the police will allow. We will advise you if the situation changes and the garage needs to be closed.
Kaiser Center: Building and garage will operate as usual, unless the security director determines that other action needs to be taken.
1111 Broadway: No access to the garage or superdock beginning at 8 p.m. on Wednesday and continuing until 6 p.m. on Thursday. In addition, the building will be accessible by badge only on Thursday. Any visitors must be escorted by tenants from the lobby.
