All UCOP staff is invited to join President Napolitano to celebrate UC’s community of first-generation college students and learn about a new systemwide effort to connect them with faculty role models:

Enjoy afternoon cupcakes while you hear a brief talk about this innovative initiative. And if you were a college trailblazer in your family, you can pick up a T-shirt to show your own #FirstGen pride!

This fall, the UC system formally launched a coordinated effort across all 10 campuses to help ease the transition to college for first-generation students by connecting them with faculty mentors who themselves were first-generation college grads.
More than 900 faculty members have signed on, donning T-shirts and buttons to identify themselves to students and joining alumni, staff and students to share their stories online and in social media. UC also launched a website with first-gen stories and resources. Now UC is working to expand the effort to include all members of the UC community who were the first in their family to go to college — including those at OP.
