ICYMI: 2017 UCOP Staff Engagement Survey results
The results of the 2017 Staff Engagement Survey are in and show several areas of improvement.
The Staff Engagement Survey, developed by the Council of University of California Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) and UC Systemwide Human Resources, provides insight into the views, experiences and needs of staff on 10 topics related to working at UC:
- Working relationships
- Diversity and Inclusion
- Performance management
- Career development
- Organizational change
Diversity and Inclusion, and Wellness were new categories added to this year’s survey. Results from the survey help OP determine areas where progress was made, as well as areas that need further effort and attention.
The 2017 survey was sent to more than 20,000 staff throughout the university and roughly 51 percent responded. At the Office of the President, 800 staff were sent the survey, of which 529 responded. This is a 16 percent increase from the 2015 survey and the highest response rate of any UC location.
Key findings for UCOP
The UCOP survey results revealed that six out of the eight categories improved from the 2015 results. Areas in which respondents noted improvement included supervision, communication and performance management. For example, participants were significantly more likely to feel that their personal contributions are recognized than in 2015. Another area demonstrating improvement was matching pay to performance, which was up 9 percent from the 2015 survey.
Areas for Improvement
Managing organizational change is an area of growing concern across UC, with just 28 percent of UCOP respondents responding favorably to questions about how recent major organizational changes have been planned, explained and executed. Personal development and growth and planning for management succession were areas respondents also felt needed more work.
While we’ve made progress in several key areas, there is still improvement to be made. A steering committee, which consists of OP Staff Assembly leaders, OPSA CUCSA delegates, the Employee Engagement and Diversity Group, Communications, Operations, and UCOP Human Resources, is meeting regularly to plan next steps.
In January, we’ll let you know about planned brown bag discussions for staff and focus groups to dive deeper into several areas that are of concern for staff. These meetings will be an opportunity for you to discuss and learn more about the survey results and the action plans underway in response to both the 2015 and 2017 surveys.
If you have questions about the survey results that you would like answered before the brown bags, please contact Joanna.Trammell@ucop.edu.
