Are you interested in becoming a certified emergency responder?

UCOP’s Office of Risk Services is sponsoring seven sessions of the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver® training course, a three-hour, instructor-led classroom course in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using the automated external defibrillator (AED).

Each session is limited to a maximum of 12 participants, and sessions are expected to fill up, so act quickly to reserve your spot or to be placed on the waiting list. Choose from the following dates and times:

• Thursday, March 8, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1
• Thursday, March 8, 1 to 4 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1
• Tuesday, March 20, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Kaiser 712
• Tuesday, March 20, 1 to 4 p.m. in Kaiser 712
• Thursday, April 19, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Kaiser 712
• Thursday, May 17, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Franklin Lobby 1
• Thursday, May 17,  1 to 4 p.m in Franklin Lobby 1

Registration is open to those interested in becoming certified or in recertifying. Every student will have hands-on skills practice with a mannequin and receive feedback from the instructor.

Those who successfully complete one of these sessions will receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR AED Course Completion Card that is valid for two years.

Register through the UC Learning Center (UCLC):

• Log in with your UCOP user name and password
• Search for “CPR” or “AED” and then click on course name
• Click Register to see session dates, click radio button next to session date you want to select it, then click Submit

UCOP established the Oakland-based CPR/AED program several years ago. Such programs have been shown to dramatically improve the survivability of a heart attack. Certified emergency responders and other staff trained in first aid and as floor wardens are a critical component of UCOP’s overall emergency plans.
