An opportunity to serve: Apply to become the next staff advisor to UC Regents

Staff across the UC system are once again invited to apply for the position of staff advisor to the Regents, a position established in 2007 to provide a staff perspective on issues faced by the board.

The application period is now open through March 23, for a two-year term that runs from July 2018 to June 2020. The position is open to both non-represented and represented staff, or non-Senate academic employees, who have at least five years of UC service.

Dwaine B. Duckett, vice president of Systemwide Human Resources, encourages all eligible staff members to consider applying. “Staff’s contributions are critical to UC’s success. They enable and execute many of UC’s groundbreaking accomplishments. Serving as a staff advisor to the Regents is a unique opportunity to elevate the staff voice — and it’s an invaluable act of service to the university.”

You can learn more about the program and how to apply by March 23 on the staff advisor website.

Jason Valdry, outgoing Staff Advisor to the Regents, took on the role for the opportunity to address UC’s challenges on a broad scale. He hasn’t been disappointed. “My experience has been rewarding personally, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done on issues that have real consequences for staff — from cybersecurity to retiree health benefits. I’ve had the opportunity to meet with the Regents one on one, sharing the staff viewpoint through deep and meaningful conversations. And I’ve seen the impact of those conversations on Regents’ decisions.”

Staff advisors participate in open sessions and designated committees of the board of Regents, representing their fellow employees in UC Board of Regents deliberations and to decision-makers at the Office of the President. Staff advisors serve as non-voting members of designated Regents’ committees; they attend and participate directly in committee and board meetings throughout their term of service, and visit many of the campuses to solicit input from staff.

Valdry, a director of technology at UC Irvine, serves as staff advisor alongside Sherry Main, chief communications and marketing officer at UC Santa Cruz. Main’s term continues through June 2019. Since the UC Board of Regents established the staff advisor position in 2007, staff from nine of ten campuses – and UC Davis Health, UCSD Extension and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab – have served in the role.
